It’s Important to Listen!

Children with autism often have a difficult time attending to the words given by other people. They can be distracted by other noises in the room which makes it difficult for them to follow the instructions given by another person. Parents or caregivers who are giving listener instructions may have to compete with the inner thoughts of the child.

Children on the spectrum are taught listening skills in ABA based upon the VB-MAPP created by Mark Sundberg. Children can acquire listening skills based upon their atypical developing peers. We teach basic skills and then can move to more complex skills. Simple task of touching an item or finding an item to more complex of three step directives. When giving a directive to a child always be sure to connect the act with the demand, follow through with prompting the child with the correct response.

Teaching listening skills opens doors for the child with autism, such as being able to attend in school, attend to peers, and engage in conversation as active listeners. Listening skills are important in communication and in relationships. Teaching active listening skills to your child will help to benefit them in the long run and help them to be more successful in social and communication areas.

The prevalence of autism is growing, making screening tools to determine where a child falls on the autistic spectrum more important than ever. It is now recommended that all children receive autism screening. There are varying levels of screening, including initial screening and in-depth testing. Here is what you need to know about the available tests and what they mean. The M-CHAT, or Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, is the first line of autism screening. It is recommended for all toddlers by the American Academy of Pediatrics and is a very basic checklist of developmental milestones designed for toddlers between the ages of sixteen and thirty months. The M-CHAT uses the range of normal behavioral and developmental milestones at each age and screens for any possible delays or the existence of autistic traits.

The test is a standard part of a well-child checkup, and can unobtrusively be incorporated into the exam with a simple checklist. Your pediatrician will know how to interpret the results and whether further testing is indicated. Falling behind on one or two measures is not a cause for alarm, as all children will reach different milestones at different times and certain verbal and communication-related milestones may be given more weight in determining autistic traits.

If further testing is required to determine your child’s need for services or not, the VB-MAPP is a much more in-depth look at the verbal abilities of your child. The Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program screens for over 170 components of speech and language development, including measures such as social and independent play, listening skills, verbal matching, and many more. This comprehensive testing not only accurately assesses where your child’s strengths and weaknesses lie, it provides distinct guidelines for treatments and therapies to help your child’s progress.

Understanding available testing for autistic traits and what it means for your child and family is an invaluable tool in helping your child to overcome their challenges and be the best they can be.

Designed for children with autism, as well as individuals who show language delays, the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP) is an educational assessment instrument and a curriculum guide used to assess learning, language, and social skills. The program has five categories that display a balance across verbal operants and related skills.

The first category is the VB-MAPP Milestones Assessment, which provides detailed information of a child’s existing verbal repertory along with other related skills. It contains 170 measurable learning and language milestones sequenced across 3 levels of development (0-18 months, 18-30 months, and 30-48 months). The skills that are assessed include tact, independent play, and writing.

The second category is the VB-MAPP Barriers Assessment which provides 24 common learning and language acquisition barriers experienced by children with autism or other developmental disabilities. Identification of barriers allows for the development of specific strategies of intervention to help lead to more effective learning.

The third category is the Transition Assessment, which assists in the identification of a child’s progress. It contains 18 assessment areas and can provide a measurable way for priorities to be set in order to meet the student’s educational needs. Also included are measures of the overall score on the milestones assessment, barriers assessment, as well as various behaviors and skills.

Fourth of the assessment categories, is the Task Analysis and Skills Tracking, which provides a more in-depth breakdown of skills, serving as a complete learning and language skills curriculum guide. There are hundreds of skills presented. These skills cover the 16 areas of the overall assessment.

The final category is the Placement and IEP Goals, developed based on the previous four assessments. This guide gives a specific direction for each of the 170 milestones in the first assessment as well as IEP goal suggestions. These suggestions help parents, teachers, and program designers build the most effective curriculum fitting the student.

Verbal behavior , a speech grading system made mainly for children with Autism and a variation of other speech problems that have been diagnosed of years. There are 5 different components of VB-MAPP which provides baseline level performance, direction of intervention, a system tracking skill acquisition, a tool of outcome measures and other language projects that have been researched and curriculum planning for a framework. The skills in the VB-MAPP are not at all just reliable and measurable but balanced in any skill relating in verbal development.

Providing a sample of the patients verbal and related skills is the first component of the VB-MAPP. The assessment has approximately 170 learning and language milestones that are balanced across 3 developmental levels from the ages of 0-18 months from 18- 30 months and lastly 30-48 months. Skills included in the assessment are mind, tact, and echoic plus a great more but that was just to keep the list short and to name a great few.

Providing a assessment that contains common learning and language barriers that children with Autism face or any other developmental disabilities is component number 2, the Barrier Assessment. The barriers that are being assessed are behavior problems, instructional control, defective minds, defective tact’s and a great few more. When these barriers are identified by the test then things can be done for a child to overcome his or her problem.

The third is the Transition Assessment, containing exactly 18 assessments. This third assessment can help identify whether a child is making meaningful progress. This assessment is a tool providing information to let it be known what needs to happen to meet a child’s learning needs. The assessment includes measures of the overall score of the VB-MAPP milestones and barriers assessments and many more skills.

The forth component is the VB-MAPP Task Analysis and skills tracking that provides further breakdown of the skills. It serves a complete learning and language skills curriculum guide. Verbal Behavior is very complicated and to overcome barriers of speech problems can be over whelming for a child.

The fifth and very last component is VB-MAPP placement, goals that correspond with the first four components. The placement guide provides directions specifically for what should be done. The intervention program are there to ensure the relevant parts that are necessary for the intervention that is included.
